This week has been all about catching up on the little things. As I mentioned in my last post, I fell a bit behind on my NaNoWriMo word count last weekend on account of both being under the weather and James being here for a short visit. [...] I started my morning off with a bit of a bang. A major plot twist that had been alluding me since the beginning of the novel snapped into place like Lego blocks, and I have spent the last two hours combing through strands to work it into place. [...] Ahhh, this weekend has been jampacked with goodness, but I won’t lie. It’s been incredibly busy because of that. On Friday, I was on track with my NaNo wordcount, but after driving into Rochester to pick up James early Saturday morning, we wound up sleeping much of yesterday. When we did finally get around, the [...] It’s November 1, 2009, and the official kickoff of the 2009 NaNoWriMo season. Thirty days of novel writing madness. Participants have done the math, and know that in order to reach their 50,000 word goal by midnight on November 30th, they have write 1667 words or more every day. Seems like a drop in the [...] I hope that whatever you are committed to, you are following through. Many of us fear commitment because we worry that we won’t follow through, and when you don’t follow through it let’s the people who count on you, but most especially yourself, down. Never be afraid to commit to yourself out of worry that you’ll let others down. It’s an excuse and a cop out to remain stagnant. Since this is the only life we know of that we as individuals get to experience, risk everything… [...] Okay, okay. Maybe you do need an editor. I know that even doing editing for others, I still need an editor myself. We all need an extra set of eyes from time to time to look over our work, pick out the mistakes and help us improve the overall content., but long before you hit up an editor, self-editing is an essential part of the creative process. Editing your own work will not only help you analyze your strengths and weaknesses as a writer, but you can pinpoint spelling and word mistakes, grammar errors, plot and character weaknesses and points in your story that might need expansion or even reduction. [...] Sometimes, you just can’t hold it in, and I guess that’s probably a good thing, because if you did, it would turn into a little ember in your heart that would over time become a raging fire. No, I’m not talking about passion, though that happens too. I’m talking about resentment. We all need support. [...] I really enjoy writing these blogs a lot more than I thought I would. Making the commitment out loud seems to strengthen my resolve to achieve the things I set out to do. Not only because I make the commitment to myself, but I feel like when I say it out loud here on my blog, I make the commitment to you, my readers. There is nothing more I hate than letting people who depend on me down, and if I’ve said anything over the last few months to inspire anyone to write, work, walk, [...] It was commitment and support from people who care about me that pushed me to do what needed to be done. Because let’s face it. Sometimes we want to do things, but maybe we don’t feel confident or strong enough to take the steps we need to take. When you have people in your life who truly care about you and want to see you succeed, they don’t pull any punches. They push you when you start to step back from the edge, because they know you need to learn to fall before you can fly. [...] If you’ve been following my blogs for awhile, you already know I’ve been making a huge stink about how important it is to commit to the things you want from life. As a writer, commitment is such a huge ordeal, as you can’t just start things and leave them to wallow by the wayside while [...] |
