    When Wow Just Isn’t Enough…

Yesterday was amazing, and let me tell you why. I kicked off my podcast novel yesterday, and frankly the entire feat was nothing short of miraculous. Yes, I believe in miracles or handouts from the universe, if that’s what you want to call them, because yesterday was a miracle.

I joked around yesterday that I was going to write an article called: Adventures in the Goblin Market: An Idiot’s Foray into Podcasting… because I will tell you the truth: podcasting is hard. I learned so much with my first episode (including to make 900000 backup files,) that I am almost certain that episode two will be ten times better, and by the time I get to episode ten, I’ll look back on these early episodes and want to give them a complete makeover.

To give you an idea of how insane episode one was, let me tell you some funny things that happened to me on my way to the Goblin Market…

I actually recorded episode one about three weeks ago so I would have time to experiment with music and all that good stuff. It was fun. I loved it. I shared it with a friend. THANK the gods that I did. Because Tuesday night, I was adding Mur Lafferty’s WAR promo to the end of my podcast and when I saved and sat back to listen, the entire file had somehow gotten corrupted. How? You ask? I have no idea. It was just busted and there was NO way I was going to release it to the public in that form. So I cried. Then I checked my back-up files… nothing. Don’t ask, because I don’t know. I cried again.

So there I was, completely screwed and worried that I was going to have to re-record all 22 minutes of the episode over again. Fortunately, I recalled having sent the original out to be previewed, and my life was saved. Thank the Gods for the heroes of the world!

After downloading the MP3, I got up early Wednesday so I could re-edit episode one, rerecord my intro and outtro and tack on the WAR promo. I got everything done in time, saved (which took about an hour because the file was so large and I’m working with Dellasaurus Rex…) and voila.

I felt confident I was ready to go. I went about my day, got my writing in, did a smidge of work, danced the Salsa, took a nap… around 5:30, I was previewing the file, only to discover that I had inadvertently cut off the first ten seconds of Mur’s promo. So I had to re-edit that section and save again… another hour.

MY GODS WOMAN! That is what I said to myself. Very loudly. If I could have grabbed myself and given a hard shake, believe me, I would have. Because I should have had one last listen before I saved and exported. Yes, I should have. But the world is not built on could have and should have. It is built around “DID, DONE, DO!” Next time, that is what I will do!

Needless to say, I barely got the file uploaded to the site at the promised time last night, but that’s the thing… I DID get it uploaded, and I kicked it off rather successfully. So thank you!

I have been planning this podcast for about a month now. I decided just before I moved into my new place that I would light a much needed fire under my derriere and get this podcast on the net. Thanks to mediums like Twitter, good friends and word of mouth, I consider yesterday’s launch of episode one a huge success. I got kudos and feedback from some pretty admirable podcast novelists that I respect and admire, but more than that I got a ton of thumbs up and feedback from you guys. People from all over the world tuned in to hear episode one, from China and India to Canada and New Zealand, and of course the states as well.

I am so very excited about all of this. I’ve had lots of dms and @ replies on Twitter asking when episode two will be available. I intend to release a new episode every Wednesday evening around the same time unless unforeseen circumstances crop up, in which case I will let you know.

In other news, I started a google group for a bunch of my writer friends on Twitter to help us all keep our writerly goals in check this July. We all have different goals, but many of us are going for 1000-1500 words per day. If you’re interested in joining the group, please email me jennybeanses@gmail.com and let me know what you’re working on and what your goals for the month of July look like. It’s only been in action for about twenty-four hours, but already it’s an incredibly supportive group. If that’s what you’re looking for, join us.

Now, I”m off to write my 1500 words for the day. Thanks again to everyone who helped make Episode One of Goblin Market a huge success. I am so happy I have such an amazing world to share my work with. :)
